Illustrator Homework 1

This video described how to use the pen tool to create difficult designs. This particular creator chose to recreate the image of Spiderman. I thought most of the design process was fairly simple to follow with this image. The creator just added an image of Spiderman in the base layer, traced it with simple curved lines, and then deleted the base layer. The only part that looked a bit difficult was when he had to add a fill to some of the curved shapes he created. I’m excited to try out this technique.

This video showed how to create “balloon lettering” in Illustrator. I was drawn to the thumbnail because I thought it was a really cute concept and similar to my own artistic style. I think the text tool seems super easy to use and manipulate with colors, fonts, and shapes. However, the warp tool seems a bit more difficult to use, and tedious with changing the points. The artist finished the design by adding a shiny effect using lines with a curved edge, and added a shadow behind each letter. Overall, this design seemed simple but tedious.

This video is a tutorial for how this man created his logo. It was fairly simple, and similar to the Spiderman video, but I liked seeing how he added his own flair in his designs. He created a circular logo design, and used a lot more of the shape tool than the first video. I liked seeing how he added gradients and different fills. He added many different colors and shapes to his design which was interesting.

BW to Color

For my BW to color project, I wanted to use a lot of bright colors and pastels to fill in my photo. I liked using odd colors like purple and green for my hair because I thought it would look very out-of-the-box and cooler. The hair was the most difficult part to color in because it was windy that day and I had a lot of flyaways I needed to capture. Something I think I could've done a little better on is the background – If I had more time I would've chosen to make all of the flowers different colors.

Somewhere

For my Somewhere project, I wanted to place myself in a scene from Mean Girls. Although I've seen the movie many times, it's not my all-time favorite movie, but I chose it because the wardrobe for this movie is so iconic, and I wanted to try and emulate it. To create this scene, I first chose the mall scene from the movie to place myself in. I chose this because all of the characters are facing the camera, with little overlap between them, so I thought it would be the easiest to make it look realistic. On photoshop, I first overlaid the image of me over Gretchen to replace her. I then took the opacity down and removed Gretchen from the image. This was the most difficult part because she's in front of a very busy background, so erasing her hair in front of the stairs was hard. After that. it was pretty easy to complete. It was fun to toy around with the different coloring and lighting options.

Business Cards

  For my business cards, I wanted to incorporate interesting patterns and designs, but still keep the overall look clean. I did this by mirroring the colors used in my original logo designs, and kept the information side minimal, with only the logo, text, Instagram handle and bullets. The first card I went for a simple symmetrical look, with ovals mirrored on both sides. If I were to make a business card in real life I would want it to be simply black and white or soft gray and white. The second design is probably my favorite because I love the colors green and yellow, and they align with my brand messaging. I also just think the swoops look really pretty and neat. The last design I was a bit more adventurous with, and went with a fire-inpired design. Although I think it looks cool, I would not use the third design as my chosen business card because the colors are a bit harsh for a business card, I would want my business card to be symmetrical, and I would also want my card to be horiz
